No matter the season, there are always fun things to do around town. Looking for an awesome activity to do during spring? Our staff has got you covered with some great recommendations!
Biking the Core Trail
The Core Trail is a popular bike and walking path that runs along the Yampa River and through Steamboat. Around the trail are several scenic stops including the Yampa River Botanic Park and Fetcher Pond, a stocked fishing pond where families can fish, play, or just enjoy the natural beauty surrounding them. Allison’s family just went to Fetcher Pond to go fish, and she’s happy that because of the warmer weather she and her family can ride their bikes along the Core Trail to the pond.
Hiking up Emerald Mountain
Emerald Mountain’s trailhead is located right next to downtown Steamboat. The mountain offers several trails to choose from, and is open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. If there is still snow on the trail you might even be able to spot skiers and sledders going down the mountain! Michael likes hiking here as he loves to see the first signs of spring on the aspen trees on this trail. He also enjoys watching the remnants of winter and snow be replaced by mountain flowers and lush green trees. To add to this, locals know that one of the best views in town is at the top of Emerald Mountain, where you can see not only Mount Werner in all its glory but also all of town.
Every May Diane performs in the annual Steamboat Cabaret. The Cabaret is worked on by local Steamboat writers and thespians who delight in showcasing skits about living in Steamboat. The Cabaret benefits Steamboat Creates, Steamboat’s Creative District, an organization designed to support art culture around town. Diane also loves morning walks in the springtime, especially when she can see or hear the newly arrived birds that came back from traveling south during winter. Her favorites are a pair of Sandhill Cranes that have a nest on her property. Soon Diane is hoping to see the egg they have been protecting hatch so that she can see a baby crane on her property, too!
Hanging out outside
Derek’s favorite part of springtime is when it is finally warm enough to hang out outside and listen to the river. His favorite place to do this is at Mountain Tap Brewery, conveniently located along the Yampa River and also below The Steamboat Group’s office. Sitting outside and enjoying the warm weather while listening to the sounds of Steamboat is a favorite of many, especially as Steamboat transitions from being Ski Town, USA to Bike Town, USA.
Jon Wade’s Recommendation
Mixing the Seasons
Jon enjoys being able to go on both summer and winter adventures in the spring. His favorite way of doing this is by biking in the morning and then skinning up the mountain on skis in the afternoon, when the snow is softer. Trails like the Ridge Trail and Mad Creek Trail offer great options for biking, and when the mountain closes Jon enjoys biking up the Gondola line.
For Ali, springtime means time to start mountain biking! Several trails open up during the spring, including Buff Pass and Emerald Mountain. Click here for more information on great bike trails that you can go on. Ali also loves the springtime because it means that she can take her newly adopted puppy, Winston, outside to play, enjoying the new spring sunshine!
Steamboat kids getting ready for summer
Ryan’s favorite part of the springtime in Steamboat is seeing his son exclusively wear shorts to school starting in March. One thing everyone seems to notice when living in Steamboat is that no matter the weather, once the sun starts coming out Steamboat residents start dressing for summer warmth.
Jon Kowalsky’s Recommendation
Biking and Bread
JK loves to ride his Moots Routt RSL on all of Steamboat’s awesome gravel roads. Steamboat is often recognized as a gravel biker’s paradise. After biking JK often heads over to Smell That Bread Bakery, a famous bakery in Steamboat that every local adores.
In the spring Erik likes exploring Steamboat’s trails as they begin to dry out. His favorite part when doing this is seeing everyone else get excited about the upcoming summer!
Enjoy the plants and animals
Debbie’s favorite part of spring in Steamboat is seeing people, plants, and animals start to venture outside a little more. Specifically, she loves to see her neighbor’s bed of tulips begin to grow and loves to hike the Uranium Mine Trail up by Fish Creek Falls. Debbie also enjoys seeing animals out and about- already she has seen moose, bears, and foxes running around!
Mud Season Specials
In the spring Alex recommends going to restaurants around Steamboat to seek out their Mud Season specials. Alex also enjoys traveling to desert areas around Steamboat in either Fruita or Moab, as Steamboat is in great proximity to many of those locations. To add to this Alex bikes often around the county roads in Steamboat.
Check out the flowers!
Wendy had a lot to say, as spring is her favorite time to be in Steamboat. During the three weeks after the snow melts Wendy enjoys going to the Botanic Gardens for inspiration on her yard work, taking advantage of restaurant’s mud season specials, and walking down main street when the crabapple trees are in bloom. Wendy loves to see the town gleam green and watch the sarvis berry bushes slowly get covered in white blossoms. These three weeks are Wendy’s favorite time of the year.
